Book Review – Resurrection by Arwen Elys Dayton

Resurrection by Arwen Elys Dayton My rating: 4 of 5 stars I really enjoyed this story, it was a mix of classic science fiction, ancient history and a modern thriller. I'm not an expert on the Egyptology, but what there was worked very well for me as a story and was plausible. It managed to avoid being too Erich von Däniken in its approach, and the way that the locals never grasped the technology was completely believable. Another aspect that I liked was the interplay between the metal poor and biotech rich Kinley (humans from a planet 8 light years away) and their enemies who used cloned Kinley to spy on them. This provided some of the science fiction backdrop for a modern day thriller, with the two racing to recover the lost secret of faster than light travel (the…

Safestyle Scamming

This afternoon, while I was making lunch for Lucy, the phone rang. Now we only have a phone because you need a BT line to get broadband, so the handset is pretty cheap and we tend not to give the number out. Only three people ever phone me on the phone, apart from the telephone scammers. I answered the phone but didn't immediately speak. A male native english speaker asked to speak to Mr or Mrs Kemp. I asked him who was calling. "Mr Kemp, I'm just calling from the local office of Safestyle to follow up a request for a quote." he claimed. I hadn't said who I was, my policy is to neither confirm nor deny anything to people on the phone until I've worked out who they are. "Oh, really?" I commented. "Mrs Kemp requested a quote…

B203 Started

My next Open University course (B203 Business Functions in Context) started at the weekend, and the books finally ; You can see from the picture both what the course covers and also that for the first time in the seven OU modules I've done the course books have not been produced by the OU itself. I'm not sure if that is just a peculiarity of this course or whether it represents a shift in OU policy. It could easily be a way to save some money. Anyway I guess I have some reading to get on

Merstham Cubs Racing Push Carts

Clark Pack team for the District Cubs Push Carts Competition #cubs (Photo credit: James Kemp) Today was the Reigate and Horley Cubs District Push Cart Racing Competition. We were down in Horley in a school playground in the rain, but we all enjoyed it immensely and we won a few races (although not enough to keep the trophy we won last year). Here are a couple of videos that I took of some of our races. Eight Year Olds Single Lap Race This was the first race that we won, and Lewis was pushing with Christopher steering. Both boys have only just come up from the Beavers. 10 Years and under Relay Race We had Solomon pushing in lap 1 and Thomas P in lap 2 with Alex steering, they had a fantastic race and then crashed off the course…

Megagame: Iron Dice – Turn 10

Third week of October 1914 Iron Dice umpire map at 15:57 (Turn 10) BEF Report to the War Office The Belgians on our left were attacked and driven out of their trench line, and retreated towards Calais. The BEF left flank is, although entrenched, hanging in the air again. BEF reserve troops are at St. Omer. A request to the navy is made to bombard Dunkirk. A combined counter-attack will be made by the BEF's left flank and the cavalry (reserve), supported by heavy artillery and naval bombardement. Team Control Gloss The BEF were using the fact that the enemy in front of them appeared to have gone static to rotate and rest their Corps. They also absorbed nine of the 12 available TF Battalions to bring all the Corps back up to full strength after the casualties from their…
