Mid 21st Century Policing

English: Metropolitan Police officers on patrol in London's Trafalgar Square (Photo credit: Wikipedia) I've been thinking about how policing in the UK might evolve over the next few decades. This is a combination of evaluating the background I've done for Perfects and also looking at perhaps running some more near future police roleplaying over the summer. I'm going to pick an arbitrary date of 2040, 25 years in the future. One thing I'm sure won't change is the concept of policing by consent. It's a fundamental plank of how we do things in Britain, and we know that it works. Other things that I think are given are budget pressures (the perennial more with less cry) the adoption of new technology to transform how policing happens visible policing with people on the ground So it's an evolution of traditional policing…

East End Explosions

I've been exploring the world of Perfects with some friends by running a roleplaying session with the Full Moon games group playing the senior officers of a police counter-terrorism group. More details on Operation Hawkeye. I couldn't resist writing some press stories as a result of the session. East Ended! Brave cops foil GM terror group in dawn raid. Silverton residents were woken by automatic gunfire and a bomb blast as terrorists fought off a police raid. Brave officers stormed through a hail of fire to take out the terrorists. One terrorist was confirmed killed by police, although not before two officers were wounded. Another is believed to have blown themself up in a suicide bombing. Commander Coalfield, the Counter Terror Chief, called on citizens to lookout for accomplices to the GM terrorists that may have escaped. Forensic teams are scouring the…

Meeting the Bechdel Test

I first came across the Bechdel Test on Charles Stross's blog when he was discussing its importance for pushing gender equality in fiction. However what has prompted this post is this article on Rochelle Dean's blog about her current work in progress. Since becoming aware of the Bechdel test I have consciously tried to meet the spirit of it in all the stuff I write, and as much as I can the actual conditions too. The Bechdel Test The rules There are three rules to the test: There are at least two named female characters in the story The women have a conversation with each other The conversation should not be about a man The Spirit of the Bechdel Test What I think is most important though is meeting the spirit of the test, which as I understand is that there should…

Wattpad and a new beginning for Perfects

In reading through my blog feed I came across a very interesting article by Ian Sutherland on using Wattpad. It was so interesting that I thought I might give Wattpad a shot myself. One of the things that I have done as a consequence of learning much more about creative writing is to write a new beginning for Perfects (as well as re-write bits in the middle and what comes after the parts published so far). So if you would like to see the new beginning of Perfects, then it is on wattpad.  When I finally have time, likely to be in the summer when A215 is finished, then I will complete the re-write and publish is both as an ebook and paperback. Imperfect (Exodus #2) Serialised

Following on from having posted Perfects in each of the five chapters I have decided to post Imperfect as well. However I intend to post it in smaller pieces and more frequently. Every other day for the next couple of weeks there will be one of the scenes from Imperfect posted here. Synopsis of Imperfect (Exodus #2) Following on from where Perfects left off, with Charlie arrested by the police and the fate of the others in his cell unknown. Pandora sets off to find where she was born in the hope of finding her mother, however Rosie catches her leaving the house and together they discover what has happened to the others and set off on a daring plan to rescue them. Pandora steps irrevocably onto the wrong side of the law, kidnapping national police officers and learning to…
