2018 Resolutions Revisited

As in previous years I've posted some New Year Resolutions on my blog. Given it's the end of the year I thought I ought to revisit them. 2018 Resolutions I have a few 2018 resolutions, they’re all a little lower key than the 2017 ones. Read 40 books over the course of the year (I managed 27 in 2017, but have read more in previous years) Design a megagame (finishing what I started) Write 50 blog posts, edit Perfects and publish it Get my weight under 13 stone and keep it there. Read 40 Books I haven't done this, my Goodreads profile shows that I've fallen short by 1 book, 135 pages to be exact. That's an improvement on last year, but still not the forty I set as a target. One thing I've realised is that progress depends on…

Themself Giveaway Evaluation

Chocolate teapot. What is better, this or a kindle giveaway? I promised to do some evaluation of my Goodreads Giveaway. Before the Themself Giveaway on Goodreads there were six reviews averaging four stars (1 x 2, 3 x 4 & 2 x 5 stars). Another 28 people had it on their 'to read' shelf. Overall I doubt there were 100 copies already out there. I know for sure that I'd sent out 10 paperbacks for review, as well as emailing some ebook versions. Evaluation of the Goodreads Giveaway The Goodreads Giveaway offered up to 100 ebooks to people with a Kindle registered to I also offered anyone that commented on the announcement post an ebook. As at midnight on 21 March 192 people had requested a copy. 174 of those added it to their shelves. The Costs There's two ways…

Reviews are King – Book Marketing Pt.2

Reviews are king. Books with good reviews sell way more copies than those that haven't. Even when you do a free giveaway more people will download a book with positive reviews than the same one with none. (See my A/B testing post). Getting Reviews You don't want to rely on people who buy your book leaving reviews. There are two reasons why not. Without reviews you won't sell many copies Very few people review products (compared to the numbers that download/buy it) So you need to do some research. Google book review sites for the genres you think your book is a reasonable match for. Read the reviews of books you've read and see whether you think they might like your book. (You have read other books in the genre you're writing in? If not go do so immediately, you must understand…

Giveaway on Goodreads – Themself in Paperback

My latest work, Themself, is now also available in paperback. I've organised a Goodreads Book Giveaway. All you need to do is go over to the goodreads website and tell them you would like a copy (see below for the link). At the end of February they'll randomly select five lucky winners who I will send a paperback copy of Themself to. Here's the book blurb on the paperback version: "On a whim in November 2012 James Kemp took part in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenge to write 50,000 words during November. He didn't quite make it, but he did get hooked on writing. That was his spur to enrol on a Creative Writing course with the Open University starting in October 2013. Themself is his story of how he became a writer, told in part using contemporary blog posts…
