Scottish Independence – It’s Very Close Indeed

I've updated the graphs with the latest polls and re-drawn them, I've also ignored the polls from before March 2014, so this is just the last six months of polling (about 50 separate polls). My original data source is ,_2014 The graph clearly shows that as the poll gets closer more people are making their minds up, and that the gap between the views is narrowing. Yesterday saw a major effort by the No campaign to influence the Don't Knows which won't yet have made its way into the opinion data as the latest one was only published yesterday. If you haven't made up your mind yet then you might be the person that decides the outcome. Here are some useful links that might be of assistance in gathering the facts (NB apply buckets of salt to anything said by politicians,…

Ice Bucket Challenge

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been doing the rounds to raise awareness (and funding) for ALS, which is known as Motor Neurone Disease in the UK. My wife nominated me, and I did it. I also thought it was worth make a small regular donation to MND every month and did this through the Just Giving website. I posted the video on facebook, you ought to be able to see it without logging in as I made it public. Post by James Kemp. Breaking Bad (season 1) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) How un-American is Breaking Bad, yo! Sorry, couldn't resist it. If you haven't seen it yet then you need to go watch it. I'm catching up on it via Netflix and so far I've made it through series 2. Unlike most US TV shows it has short series (five series muster 67 episodes in total). There are a number of other ways, all of them good, that make it stand out: * the protagonist is bad; * it is the dark underbelly; * it shows US society as fundamentally broken; * viewers need intelligence to get it; * you need to actively watch it; * loads of geek humour & science. A Good Man Gone Bad Dr Walter White is a way overqualified chemistry teacher in an Albuquerque High School. In the opening…

Radio Silence

I thought I'd just post a short note explaining why I've not written much over the last fortnight.  Some of this is the fact that work has been very busy and I've been working longer than normal hours from the beginning of April. This used up the spare articles I've written as well as the time to write more. The writing time I have had has been used to write some poetry for TMA5 of A215 (Creative Writing). This is due next week, so is likely to continue to consume writing time. When that's done I have TMA1 for B120 (Intro to Business Studies) due a week later followed by the End of Module Assessment (EMA) for A215 which is worth 50% of the marks. So its likely to be early June before a normal three times a week service…

A215 – Life Writing – Initiative at Night

Here's the second of the pieces I wrote for the A215 Creative Writing online tutorial on life writing. Saturday 13th December 1991 It’s 3am on a Saturday before Christmas 1991, I’ve only been awake for 21 hours. After a day of lectures I went with the UOTC to Redford Barracks in Edinburgh for a training camp. Since 1830 I have been on the Pentland Hills doing orienteering and solving problems with a team of third year cadets. We’ve not been good at following the approved DS solutions. To change the tire on a land rover without a jack we ignored the planks and mik crates and instead rolled the vehicle onto its side before righting it after we’d changed the tire. Our time was the fastest, but the officer wasn’t pleased. To take a casualty across a minefield (laid with…
