Book Review – Blitzkrieg Legend

"In the West (Western campaign).- Panzer II and Panzer I in the woods; KBK Lw Kompanie Luftwaffe, "Luftwaffe war-reporting company" 4" (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The Blitzkrieg Legend: The Campaign in the West, 1940 by Karl-Heinz Frieser My rating: 5 of 5 stars As part of the planning for the megagame War in the West I bought myself a copy of Blitzkrieg Legend because it is the German Army’s official history (although it didn't get written until the 1990s). From reading the first couple of chapters and looking through the maps you can see the evolution of the German plan. You can see why the directive was written the way that it was in October 1939. The most interesting thing for me is that there is no concept of a lightning war, the general staffs & high command all believe that…

Ubuntu Server Migration Plan

I'm thinking of buying a new computer to replace my old Pentium III which acts as a server for all my web and e-mail etc. It is starting to show its age and creaks a bit under the load. So I've got a candidate for a replacement for it, an Acer Revo 3610. So far I've found this thread on Ubuntu Forums: migrate ubuntu server. The key bit that is helpful is the command to find out what is installed on the server: Code: dpkg --get-selections > SomeFileName you'll get a list of everything installed on your old server. If you then take that file and remove the trailing spaces/status and run: Code: sudo apt-get install < SomeEditedFileName you'll have apt-get installing and configuring everything that was on the old server. Sainsburys Deli Cooking Instructions

Please support themself by borrowing or buying one of my books.  These cooking instructions for Sainsbury's Deli made sure I got my dinner this evening. After a couple of hours trying to get back home with the new (to us) car I realised that the chap in Sainsbury's had forgotten to add the cooking instructions to the takeaway curry I'd bought. A minute or so with google turned up trumps! I've cut and pasted them here just in case the original goes off-line for any reason . Sainsbury's Deli Cooking Instructions Allergies: Because of the way products are handled, it's possible that nuts, seeds and other allergens may be present in any item. Cooking Instructions: All cooking appliances vary, these are guidelines only. ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE PRODUCT IS PIPING HOT BEFORE SERVING Conventional Oven Cooking Instructions Transfer contents into an ovenproof…

Slumming in Standard

I'm currently on the 12:30 from King's Cross to Durham (it goes to Newcastle, but I'm getting off at Durham). This is a business trip, but for once I'm on a standard ticket instead of first class. I have to say that I now appreciate first class all the more! There is a reason why on the few occasions that I have travelled by train in the last few years I've bought myself first class ; Quite simply it is about space and comfort. There is miles more leg room, table space and seat in the first class compartments compared to the standard. You don't feel like you are in other people's way nor cramped in any way. There is room to breathe. Not only that, but the wifi is faster in first class, and there is free coffee brought…

Inspiration

Image via Wikipedia Today has been an unusually inspiring day, I had two separate ideas for games both of which I reckon could be pulled off in the space of a couple of days basic research and writing briefings etc. Tracy & I both woke up early and we got a couple of hours to do things before Alexander surfaced at the rather late (for him) 9am. In that time I unusually got to watch some TV of my own choice. The first idea came from a programme on the freeview channel 'Yesterday' about the Glencoe Massacre (or more accurately the events leading up to it and the aftermath. This is the follow on to the two games I've done about the revolution in 1689-90 in Scotland. There was a meeting between Albany and the Highland Chiefs where two secret…
